First City Players' production of The Real Thing, by Tom Stoppard. The Real Thing is Tom Stoppard's most moving and surprising play - and one of the most rewarding comedies of our time. According to the New York Times, it is "The most bracing play anyone has written about love and marriage for years." Also this week: Music of the Alaska Klondike Gold Rush: Author Jean A. Murray will discuss songs and history from her book Music of the Alaska Klondike Gold Rush at the Ketchikan Public Library on Tuesday, March 5th, at 7pm. A longtime resident of Anderson, Alaska, Jean has spent countless hours in archives around the state researching the music of the gold rush era and has collected them in a lengthy book published by the University of Alaska Press. The Re-Emergence of the Northwest Canoe: Duane Pasco will present a program on Northwest Coast Native canoes. There has been a resurgence in canoe carving, which began in the last half of the 20th century and is still going on today. Friday, March 8th, from 7-8pm at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, 50 Main Street. This presentation is part of the Friday Night Insight Series, and is free and open to the public. For more information, call 228-6220. Tickets are on sale for Trio Voronezh, who will perform in Ketchikan on March 16th. Classically trained at the Conservatory in Voronezh, Russia, the Trio Voronezh was discovered playing Bach in a subway station in Frankfurt, Germany. From there, they have performed throughout Europe and North America. Their diverse repertoire ranges from classical works of Bach, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky to Russian folk music and popular songs by Gershwin and Piazzola, to Russian folk and gypsy dance music. Community Connections is seeking artwork for its 2003 Families Together calendar. If you are a Ketchikan area artist and would like your work featured in this popular calendar, please contact Karen Hahne at Community Connections at 225-5396. The calendar will again be full color, and either original work no larger than 12"X18", or slides may be submitted. There are no funds available for payment for use of the artwork, and it will be returned to you. It is requested that the theme of the artwork have something to do with family or childhood, and artists are also asked to write a brief statement connecting to this theme, which will be included on the month where the artwork is featured. This is a great opportunity to feature your work along with other wonderful Ketchikan area artists, and be a part of supporting families and children in our area and beyond! Stuff bags of food up her sweater and pretend to be pregnant, of course! Laughs are on special when 1997 Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo opens the can on shoplifting. We Won't Pay!
