Six grants totaling over
$31 million in federal highway funds have been awarded to improve
transportation services in Alaska as required by appropriations
legislation passed by Congress last fall. Senator Stevens secured
the funds in the Fiscal Year 2002 Transportation bill.
"I applaud the Federal
Highway Administration for releasing the funds that I secured
in last year's Transportation Appropriations bill in time for
this year's construction season," Stevens said. "This
money will go a long way toward improving Alaska's transportation
infrastructure and making our roads, in particular the Seward
Highway, a safer place to travel."
The grants are:
- $10 million to the Alaska
Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (AKDOT&PF)
for the Inter-island Ferry Authority Coffman Cove Facility.
- AKDOT&PF also received
$2 million for Walden Point Road on the Metlakatla Indian Reservation
and $1.5 million for Sand Point Road Improvements.
- $14,565,000 for the Seward
Highway safety improvements at Bird Creek as a part of the national
corridor planning, development, and coordinated border infrastructure
program.

and System Preservation Pilot Program.
