Opens at Tongass Historical Museum

The Tongass Historical Museum unveils its summer exhibit Friday, May 3, when "Notable Folks: A History of Ketchikan" opens during the Celebration of the Sea Art Walk.

This exhibit takes a compelling look at the people who shaped our community into what it is today. Find out why aviator Roy Jones is not only a Ketchikan celebrity, but also a milestone in Alaska history. Celebrate the legacy and bold achievements of Harriet Hunt, one of the first women professional photographers. Other highlights include carver Casper Mather, colorful first mayor Mike Martin and even some favorite "Ketchikan critters." These vignettes are joined by a look at some of our area's historic neighborhoods and distinctive locations that served as the backdrop for these characters' adventures.

"This exhibit is geared toward Ketchikan residents and visitors alike," said Heather Graham, Curator of Exhibits. "Locals will finally get to 'meet' the people behind the street names, including larger-than-life characters like John Stedman and Six-Shooter Grant, and visitors will learn some of our best kept secrets."

Complementing this visual history lesson are interesting local relics like the compass rose that used to be embedded in Mission Street, along with well-preserved equipment and early tools from a host of professions.

The opening reception will be 5 - 8 p.m. May 3, 2002, at the Tongass Historical Museum. Come enjoy the exhibit, along with wonderful live music by Harvey and Karen Hanson and light refreshments!

"Notable Folks" remains on exhibit through September 29, 2002. The Museum will be open seven days a week, 8 until 5 p.m. through the duration of this exhibit.
