The United States Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) on Monday told Senator Ted Stevens that several law enforcement agencies in Alaska have been awarded grants totaling more than $56,000 to help in the purchase of bulletproof vests.

"For the second year in a row, police departments serving under 100,000 residents are eligible for grants to cover the cost of bulletproof vests," said Stevens. "It's great to see Alaska law enforcement agencies receive the funds needed to help ensure the safety of our police officers."

Under the BJA Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Program each law enforcement jurisdiction may purchase one vest per officer per year, and all vests must meet or exceed standards developed by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Jurisdictions may also purchase NIJ-approved stab-resistant vests.

Those in Alaska awarded funds through the program are:

  • $3,994 to the Ketchikan Police Department for the purchase of ten vests.
  • $3,139 to the Alaska Department of Corrections for the purchase of 163 vests.
  • $2,360 to the Municipality of Anchorage for the purchase of 130 vests.
  • $1,540 to the Bethel Police Department for the purchase of eight vests.
  • $5,193 to the Homer Police Department for the purchase of 13 vests.

  • $10,733 to the Juneau Police Department for the purchase of 24 vests.
  • $6,572 to the Kodiak Police Department for the purchase of 16 vests.
  • $8,950 to the North Slope Borough for the purchase of 20 vests.
  • $4,041 to the Soldotna Police Department for the purchase of ten vests.
  • $1,864 to the Unalaska Police Department for the purchase of 11 vests.
