The United States Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance
(BJA) on Monday told Senator Ted Stevens that several law enforcement
agencies in Alaska have been awarded grants totaling more than
$56,000 to help in the purchase of bulletproof vests.
"For the second year in
a row, police departments serving under 100,000 residents are
eligible for grants to cover the cost of bulletproof vests,"
said Stevens. "It's great to see Alaska law enforcement
agencies receive the funds needed to help ensure the safety of
our police officers."
Under the BJA Bulletproof Vest
Partnership Grant Program each law enforcement jurisdiction may
purchase one vest per officer per year, and all vests must meet
or exceed standards developed by the National Institute of Justice

vests.
