Scholarships Awarded

Several scholarships were announced at the University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan Commencement on Saturday, May 4.

Leslie Chapel was awarded the $500 Beck Writing Award in recognition of UAS Ketchikan students who have demonstrated exceptional skills and interests in writing. Leslie was also awarded the PEO Chapter H $1,000 scholarship. PEO is a professional women's sorority that has long supported education for Ketchikan residents.

Kim Bunn was awarded the $500 Sharon "Christa McAuliffe Scholarship. This scholarship provides opportunities for students to pursue higher education and in recognition of students who contribute to the Ketchikan campus and the community.

When Peg Larson passed away in December of last year, her family and friends donated funds towards a scholarship in her name. Peg was an adventurous soul who loved the outdoor, the natural beauty of Ketchikan and who as a nurse exhibited her passion for caring for others. A $1,000 scholarship in her name is awarded this year to Jennifer Taylor.

Ketchikan CHARR dedicates it proceeds from the Salmon Derby each year to providing scholarships for Ketchikan residents who are pursuing their educational dreams. This year $1,500 was split between Katy Markiewicz and Reene Vagts.

Virginia Hampton was a highly valued employee at UAS Ketchikan. Under her supervision the Learning Center was more than a place for tutoring, it was a safe haven. She helped many students. Her patience and encouragement were integral to the success of many students at UAS Ketchikan. This years recipients of a $500 scholarship each are Katy Markiewicz and Valarie Stanley.

A $750 scholarship in memory of Phylis Smith and her work on behalf of Ketchikan students was awarded to Tracy Hildebrandt.

Gary Upson was awarded the $750 Paul Wingren Memorial Scholarship. Mr.Wingren was a Ketchikan businessman, leader and supporter of education through jobs for students pursuing higher education at UAS Ketchikan.

Several more scholarship awards will be announced later in the month. There are a few scholarships that students can still apply for. Students should contact the university for more information regarding scholarship applications.
