The opening reception for Paper Trails and Paintings from Provence, a dual show of handmade paper creations and plein air paintings by Ketchikan artist MJ Turek, will be on Friday, June 7th, from 5-7pm, at the Mainstay Gallery, 716 Totem Way. Art Camps and summer programs for kids: Sitka Fine Arts Camp June 17 - July 1, 2002, At Sheldon Jackson College Campus. Join an outstanding group of instructors and talented, fun-loving students at the 27th annual Sitka Fine Arts Camp June 2002. The Fine Arts Camp offers exciting, high quality, professional instruction in visual arts, music, dance, theater, creative writing and Alaskan Native Arts to students from all over Alaska. Last year 120 students from 23 different communities attended the camp. Camp offers students a variety of arts opportunities not usually available in their own communities. Registration is going on now for ARTSCool Arts Camp: (see "This Week" listing above). Children's SeaAlaska Culture Week: Are you looking for a safe, educational and FUN activity for your kids? The Totem Heritage Center is currently registering kids ages 7 - 14 for this year's Southeast Alaska Children's Culture Week, June 17 - 21. Several well-espected educators will lead games, crafts and a field trip. Debbie McLavey, president of the Haida Descendant Cultural Dance Group, will teach youth traditional Haida songs and dances. Tsimshian bead artist Bernice Davis will assist kids in making their own miniature octopus bags. Tlingit instructors Esther Shea and Linda Blankenship will point out what foods can be harvested from our very own seashore at Rotary Beach. The week will end with a celebratory potluck, when children will dance for their parents. Each day of Culture Week begins at 1pm and ends at 4pm. Creating a Geography of Hope: the 19th Annual Sitka Symposium. June 16th-23rd. The Sitka Symposium is a gathering that aims to put written and oral traditions to the service of ideas. It caters to a broad audience of writers, readers, and anyone interested in the theme. Activities include talks by leaders, panel and group discussions, and readings.
