Get your tickets to First City Players' production of The Fish Pirate's Daughter. Seating is limited so get your reservations for Ketchikan's original musical melodrama, back for its 37th season. Performances will take place on Saturdays, July 20th, July 27th, and August 3rd, at Steamers Restaurant. Information at 225-5600. Classes, workshops, etc: Lighting Design Workshop with professional lighting designer Patty Lanious, July 25 - August 8. This workshop will cover all aspects of stage lighting from hanging and focusing instruments to lighting design, color choices and other aspects of the art of stage lighting. The workshop dates are July 25, 26, 27 & 28 and August 5, 6, 7 & 8. Workshop times vary. Participants in the workshop will also have the opportunity to work on the lighting for Gigglefeet Dance Festival. The cost of the workshop is $75 per person and space is limited. Creating Watercolors that Sparkle: The Ketchikan Watercolor Society presents a 5-day workshop with internationally recognized painting instructor Judi Betts. $375 for KWS members, $425 for non-members. Upcoming auditions, contests, artist opportunities, etc: Alaskans for Drug Free Youth MURAL/P0STER CONTEST for students ages 8-18 (deadline: July 26th). THEME: "If you can dream it, you can become it" (Wm. Arthur War). CONTEST PURPOSE: The winning poster(s) will be painted as a mural on the side of the Ketchikan General Hospital building at 126 Washington Street to promote safe and drug free communities. CONTEST RULES: Artwork must adhere to the contest theme. Artwork must be original art designed and produced by students' ages 8-18. Artwork must include the theme name. Artwork must be produced in color on a 22x11 inch poster board. Entries are due to the by 5pm on July 26,2002. Artwork may be dropped off at:Ketchikan General Hospital, Alaskan for Drug Free Youth, Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council. Entry must be attached to the back of the poster board. Entries will become the property of Ketchikan General Hospital. SUGGESTIONS: Bold contrasting colors work best for our purposes. Keep detail limited - the image must be able to be seen from Tongass Ave. Prizes: Three winners will be chosen to have their work displayed as a part of the community. The winners will also be able to be involved and observe the artists processes during the painting of the mural. The Ketchikan Area Arts & Humanities Council invites artists to submit works for this annual exhibit. Reception: The Mainstay Gallery will host an opening reception on Friday, August 2nd, from 5-7 pm. Artists are encouraged to attend. Criteria: There is no theme. Artwork must not have been previously exhibited in Ketchikan. Open to artists working in all media, maximum of two entries per artist. All two-dimensional entries must be framed and ready to hang. All three-dimensional entries must be ready for display. Entry fees: Free to KAAHC members, $25 for non-KAAHC members. Entries submitted by mail must include payment for return postage in addition to entry fee. Calling musicians and songwriters: The 4rd annual Blueberry Battle of the Bands will take place on the performance stage during the Blueberry Arts Festival on Saturday, August 3rd. It's a festival of Ketchikan's musical talent, and there are judges and prizes. So if you're like so many who've been meaning to get the old or the new band together, start today. The Arts Council, through the underwriting support of Royal Caribbean International, is posting hundreds of dollars in cash prizes in a variety of categories. The Ketchikan Community Concert Band will start rehearsing on a regular basis again in the Fall on Monday nights at McPherson Music's Education Center, although individual sections of the band are rehearsing together this summer as small groups.
