UAS Ketchikan Sponsors Tongass Forest Centennial Conference

The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan, in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service, is sponsoring a one-day professional development conference on Tuesday, August 20 at the Ted Ferry Civic Center.

The conference, "Tongass National Forest, The Next 100 Years, will feature three keynote speakers, four breakout sessions, educational exhibits and is offered for graduate-level credit.

Participants will hear from Harry V. Wiant, Jr. at the opening of the conference. Mr. Wiant is the Joseph E. Ibberson Chair, School of Forest Resources at Penn State University. Mr. Wiant has over 48 years of experience in forestry. Luncheon keynote speaker, Denny Bschor, is the Region 10 Regional Forester. He oversees the 870 US Forest Service employees in the Tongass National Forest and the Chugach National Forest. The day will end with closing keynote speaker Mark E. Rey. Mr. Rey is the Under Secretary for National Resources and Environment.

Participants will be asked to choose one of the four break out sessions: Stewardship, Forest Science and Technology, Commercial Use or Personal Use. Presentations will be followed by facilitated discussions involving what the future of the Tongass will be in the next 100 years.

The goal of the conference is to develop a common vision for the Tongass as a sustainable multiple use resource.

The conference is open to registered participants. Conference registration is $50. An additional $50 processing fee will be charged for participants wanting one graduate-level credit. The University of Alaska Southeast Ketchikan provides a wide variety of educational courses and programs to Ketchikan and the surrounding communities throughout the year. Through these offerings, students can achieve certificate, associate, bachelor and master degrees.
