Interested candidates can apply one of two ways:
The salary of a MSF ranges from $23,600 to $35,400, depending upon experience, plus locality pay, and travel and lodging expenses. In addition, security screeners receive federal benefits including health insurance, life insurance, retirement, paid vacation and sick leave. All candidates must meet minimum requirements: being U.S. citizens and having a high school diploma, a GED or equivalent, or one year of security or aviation screening experience. At each airport, the MSFs will remain on site until permanent federal screeners are deployed. When permanent screeners are deployed, the MSFs will then be moved to another airport. MSFs eventually will end up at their home airport where they will become permanent screeners. Transportation security screener duties include providing frontline security for travelers, airports and airplanes by utilizing diverse, cutting edge electronic detection and imaging equipment to identify dangerous objects in baggage and on passengers. The Aviation and Transportation Security Act mandates that TSA recruit, hire and train personnel to assume passenger-screening responsibilities at the nation's 429 commercial airports by Nov. 19, 2002. To date, TSA has hired over 13,200 screeners, one-third of 30,000 screeners needed by the deadline. For more information regarding employment opportunities at the TSA, visit the Transportation Security Administration's website at www.tsa.dot.gov.
