Longtime Sitka Pioneers' Home Administrator Retires August 16, 2002
"Georgina Dapcevich will be the first administrator of the Sitka Pioneers' Home who was born and raised in Sitka and of Tlingit heritage," Knowles said. "She will lead the Sitka Pioneers' Home with ability born of long and intimate connections with the community she serves." Dapcevich and her six siblings grew up in Sitka. Her parents, three of her siblings and a large extended family of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins live in the Sitka community. Dapcevich attended and graduated from Sitka schools, including Sheldon Jackson College, where she received a Liberal Arts degree. She also received a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Dapcevich has extensive social work experience. In addition to her current position as the social worker for the Sitka Pioneers' Home, she has been employed as an Indian Child Welfare Worker with the Tanana Chiefs Conference, a school counselor for the Sitka Native Education Program, a tribal social worker for the Sitka Tribes of Alaska, and a Child Protection Worker and field office supervisor in Anchorage, Bethel, and Sitka for the Alaska Division of Family and Youth Services (DFYS). Dapcevich was chosen by the American Society on Aging and sponsored by ARCO to attend the New Venture in Leadership Training Program. This program is designed to train minorities in leadership techniques. Dapcevich has attended two weeks of this training and will complete a final week of the program in the fall. Dapcevich will officially become administrator on September 1, 2002. The position pays approximately $62,000 annually.
