It's Official: No Winter Road
Maintenance by State of Some Borough Roads

The Borough Assembly will discuss options for snow removal from
the roads that the State of Alaska will no longer be maintaining
at their next regular meeting which is Monday, August 19th.
According to a memo dated July
8, 2002, from Dick Smith, KGB Public Works Director, to the Borough
Manager, Smith wrote, "It is official. There will be no
winter road maintenance (plowing) of the following Borough roads:

Tongass

- D-1 Loop
- D-2 Loop
- Knudson Cove
- Knudson Spur
- North Point Higgins
- North Point Higgins Spur

- Pond Reef Road
- Potter Road
- Power House Road
- Roosevelt Spur
- Shoreline Drive
- South Point Higgins
- South Point Higgins Spur

- Wood Road."

A number of options that the
Borough Assembly could select from on snow removal were listed
in the agenda statement for consideration. The options listed
for consideration by the Assembly include:
- Residents may form Service
Areas and the Borough will oversee the snow removal contracts;
- The KGB adopts areawide road
powers and contracts out the snow removal of all the roads;
- The KGB adopts areawide road
powers and the KGB does snow removal;
- The KGB adopts provisions
for exercise of non-areawide local service roads and trail powers
and contracts for snow removal;
- The KGB adopts provisions
for exercise of non-areawide local service roads and trail powers
and the KGB does snow removal;
- Do nothing

Options for snow removal on
the roads that the State of Alaska will not be maintaining is
listed on the agenda as a discussion item only. However, the
recommended action by staff is that the Assembly provide staff
with direction as to how staff resources should be allocated
in addressing this issue.
The Borough Assembly meeting
is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm and will be held in the Ketchikan
City Council Chambers.
