The arrival of power tools unlocked a range of creative and functional possibilities to Northwest Coast Native wood workers. Learning how to safely use these power tools to their fullest potential gave carvers more time to work on the details of fine carving. Potter will explain how to safely operate such tools as a chainsaw, various sanders and planers, and a band saw to create a model canoe paddle. This class is a prerequisite for enrolling in all Totem Heritage Center carving classes. Potter, the Industrial Arts teacher at Schoenbar Middle School, was self-employed as a cabinetmaker before he attended the University of Idaho in 1980. He graduated in 1984 with a degree in Secondary Education, and has worked locally at the middle school ever since.
