Bush Proclaims August 26th as Women's Equality Day, 2002
Today marks anniversary of day women in U.S. gained right to vote

President Bush urged Americans to remember the important anniversary of the day - August 26, 1920 - when women in the United States gained the right to vote through the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

In his proclamation statement, the President said that in celebrating Women's Equality Day, Americans "remember the brave and determined individuals who worked to ensure that all women have the opportunity to participate in our democracy. Their dedication to the suffrage movement improved our society, and continues to inspire women today."
