---
Within a couple of weeks, the Airport Parking Lot on the Revilla side will be modified so that vehicles staging and vehicles exiting from the ferry will not conflict with pedestrian traffic. The east entry will be changed to allow for eastbound exiting.

The modification will separate the vehicles from the pedestrians addressing pedestrian safety which has been a concern in the past. There will also be designated parking areas for taxis and buses.

In a telephone interview Dick Smith, the Director of the KGB Public Works Department, said the proposed modification of the airport parking lot will be presented to the Borough Assembly at their next regular meeting which will be Tuesday, September 3, 2002.

If the proposed changes go forward as planned, Smith said the changes would be completed in the next couple of weeks.

Airport Terminal Remodel Update

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly awarded a contract for up to $2.496 million for the remodel and upgrade of the Airport Terminal on August 19, 2002. Work is expected to start shortly. The remodel includes a new baggage belt, relocation of several offices on the first floor, a larger baggage claim area, a new elevator to the second floor, expansion and relocation of the lounge/snack bar, earthquake proofing of the structure and new main doors for the terminal. According to information provided by the Borough, new heating and ventilation and other infrastructure upgrades are expected to increase the useful life of the terminal building.

West Taxiway Contract Awarded

The State of Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has awarded the contract for the building of an addition taxiway at the west end of the runway. According to information provided by the Borough, the taxiway project will eliminate the need for aircraft to "back-taxi" when they land on the "29" runway or take off on the "11" runway.  This should increase safety and reduce the cost of operations.  Work is expected to start this fall and continue for some time and will involve a large amount of blasting on the upland side of the runway and the hauling of rock.
