With the recent announcement by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) of the termination of winter maintenance services on 23 public roads in the Ketchikan Borough, this has left some residents with questions as to if school buses

"If it snows then the Borough has to figure out a different way to clear those roads before the buses will go down them because of the safety of the children."...
Superintendent Harry Martin - KGBSD

will be able to transport children on these roads at any time.

According to Ketchikan School Superintendent Harry Martin, the Department of Transportation provided some information to the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District (KGBSD) that will help answer this question.

Superintendent Martin said the Alaska DOT was asked what exactly winter maintenance services were and their response to the District was snow removal, sanding and salting roads. Martin said the Department of Transportation indicated they will still do the regular maintenance on these roads but nothing that deals with winter road conditions - snow removal, sanding and salting roads.

This means that the school buses will still be able to transport students on these public roads in non-winter conditions since the State will still be maintaining the roads; however, the termination of winter maintenance services by DOT&PF will impact student transportation services during winter conditions.

Superintendent Martin said we are fine for transportation as long as it doesn't snow. "If it snows then the Borough has to figure out a different way to clear those roads before the buses will go down them because of the safety of the children."
