To This Story In RealAudio - Sunday, September 22nd. This
is National Centenarians Day - a time to honor those among us
who have reached a hundred years or more, both for their long
lives and their value as living history. If you are fortunate
enough to be able to do so, make the time to listen to a centenarian.
They were around for a big chunk of U.S. history - wars, the
Depression, the development of the airplane, radio, television,
space flight and antibiotics. There are some 50,500 men and women
aged 100 or more living in the U.S. By the end of this decade,
their numbers are expected to grow to over 100-thousand, and
some experts are forecasting that retirement age may be 85 or
more, as the average life span approaches 100. (Source: U.S. Census Bureau)
