 by Cindy Rader - Adult Category Ketchikan, Alaska  Buttercup and Gumpy Buttercup is a 4-year-old basset who lost both of her eyes to glaucoma. In spite of her blindness she is a beautiful, happy, stubborn basset who is extremely spoiled. Gumpy is Buttercup's son and seeing eye dog. He reluctantly leaves her side, preferring to stay close to her at all times. He will run beside her and edge her out of the way when she gets close to running into something. One very stormy autumn night, the dogs got loose. As I was out searching, Gumpy came running up to me barking, and then ran down the street. Knowing Gumpy is always with Buttercup, I followed him for two blocks, across lawns, up a hill, and then he stopped, looking down a steep ditch. Then I saw Buttercup, in the ditch, in water up to her chest. She apparently had fallen into the ditch and was unable to get out due to the heavy bushes and steep incline. Gumpy was a hero! My dogs are both truly wonderful dogs.
