The City of Saxman had a run-off election on Friday, October 11, to determine two city council seats. Tim Burton won the second three year seat and Gilbert Benge and Harvey Shields were again tied for a two year seat. The Saxman Youth Opportunity Program will be sending 4 - 6 youth, with chaperones, to the NCAI Conference in San Diego. Following the conference, the group will be traveling to San Francisco to perform at a Tlingit and Haida Chapter event. The youth group has been working on various fundraising projects in order to earn the money for their travel. The Saxman Youth Group is continuing to work on a planned Haunted House for Halloween Night in the Green Tent. Saxman Youth Group meets every Tuesday, 5:00 p.m., at the Saxman IRA office, red building next to City Hall. Everyone is welcome. Community Hall Update: Construction on the hall remains on hold.
At the We The People/Ketchikan Indian Movement meeting held last Thursday, October 10, information was presented on the forthcoming request (Sending a Feather) for traditional tribal judges to hear concerns regarding the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) tribal council, including the recall effort and the relief sought. Also, information was shared regarding the Code of Ethics used by another federally recognized tribe. At the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) Tribal Council meeting held Monday, October 14, the revised recall ordinance was approved by the council. It was reported that KIC recently received two new grants: a Tribal Youth Mental Health grant for $285,000 over three years and a $92,000 grant dealing with Indian Health Services recruitment. No action was taken on issues pertaining to the Housing Department as no members from that department were at the meeting to respond to council member questions. The Health Administrator reported that the clinic pharmacy is now able to bill insurance companies and that the lab is also now accredited. The eye glass program is near completion and the technicians will soon be receiving training. The Alaska Native Medical Center is reducing some services due to financial issues, particularly in children's oral surgery, however this should not affect many children since 99% of children needing these services are covered through Medicaid, according to the Health Administrator. Under Economic Development, the coffee stand on the second floor of the Tongass Avenue building has not been as profitable as expected and the possibility of leasing the stand to another interest was discussed. The lease with city for the gift shop at the Totem Heritage Center was also discussed as it was also not as profitable as projected. Taggers with the hatchery are starting work this week and a bid has been awarded for repairs at the hatchery. There are a number of projects underway at the rapture center to improve the display areas and pens. KIC has donated $250 towards the cost of the All City Halloween Party and $200 to the Park Avenue homeless shelter. It was reported that 19 people have been newly enrolled at KIC and that three people have asked to be dis-enrolled from KIC. Due to Veteran's Day, the next KIC Tribal Council meeting will be Tuesday, November 19. On October 18, 7:00 p.m., Evelyn Vanderhoop, a Haida textile weaver, will provide a slide show and talk on weaving techniques of the ceremonial regalia of the Northern Northwest Native, specifically Raven,s Tail and Chilkat, at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center. She will be sharing how robes were designed, what they were used for, and why they are so important to the cultural history of the Native people of Southeast Alaska.
