2002 Phenomenal Women Awards Phoebe Newman Honored Phoebe Newman touches those who create and appreciate words of poetry, those who listen to the radio, those who enjoy reading, those who create visual art - especially wearable art - those who use any service of the Ketchikan Arts and Humanities Council to coordinate or publicize their events, and those who suffer from cancer, as well as the family and friends of those who have cancer. Phoebe began a nationally recognized annual radio program called One Poem a Day Won't Kill You, that invites people to read a favorite poem or one they have written on the radio during the month of April which is national Poetry Month. She is also a major force behind
the creation of the First City Council on Cancer and its annual
fund raiser, an auction which provides grants to those with cancer
in Southeast Alaska.
