Old Glory - (pieced, paper pieced, professionally
quilted) - Quilt owner: Jim Van Horn - Quilt Maker: Kathy Van
Horn and Judy Madden - Designer: The Buggy Barn with changes
made by Kathy & Judy.
Named "Old Glory,"
this quilt was made to honor (and surprise) retired Coast Guardsman
Jim Van Horn of Ketchikan. After retirement, Jim served his community
as an active member of the borough assembly and city council
and then in 2001 as leader of the Ketchikan American Legion Post
3 project to expand and renovate its meeting hall. It is because
of his dedication to The American legion that Kathy Van Horn
and Judy Madden thought of doing this quilt for Jim in the spring
of 2001.
Throughout the early summer,
while Jim worked with the re-model of the Legion, Kathy and Judy
worked planning and sewing this flag quilt. The lyrics of our
national anthem ":The Star Spangled Banner" are stitched
into the stripes on the quilt. In July, doctors in Ketchikan
discovered Jim had cancer and planned for surgery to take place
in Mr. Vernon, Washington in September.
In an unusual coincidence,
Jim's surgery took place on September 11th and Jim awoke to a
changed world following our nation's tragedy.
The plan was to originally
surprise Jim with this quilt at the Rainy Day quilt Show, but
continued health problems prevented him from attending. The hope
is that he will be home soon and find an appropriate place to
display the flag quilt. Old Glory is dedicated to Jim's good
health and to remembering events of September 22, 2001.
Quilted by Eileen Peacher and
Jill Bennett. Quilt started June 2001 and finished February 2002.

Abigail's Quilt - (applique and reverse applique,
machine quilted) Owner: Abigail M. Rullo - Quilt Maker &
Designer: Deb Turnbull - Deb Turnbull writes, "this quilt
was made for my first grandchild, Abigail. She is 17 months old
and very active and inquisitive. I wanted to make a quilt that
would keep her entertained. I based the quilt pattern on a piece
of fabric from an English textile company. Some of the component
blocks are strictly my own design. i like a free form approach
to quilting. I pretty much built the quilt on the design wall
and then I had to figure out how to make it work, structurally.
I hope the quilt will give Abby some sense of her 'Alaska grandmother.'
Quilt started October 2001 and finished February 2002.

Owner: Bett Jakubek - Quilt Maker: Dena Conley and Phyllis Minicucci
- Designer: Thimbleberries - The makers of this quilt write,
"this quilt was made for Bett in love and appreciation for

and spends most of her time making other people's lives better.
After we lost Tim, Bett was always there for us and we wanted
to show her how much we loved her, so we made this village quilt
for her. How appropriate that this quilt is made up of homes,
for that is where you'll find Bett on a daily basis - visiting
homes of people who need her." Quilted by Jill Bennett,

put into this quilt - curtains in the windows, tiles on the roofs,
flowers outside the homes. Quilt started and finished in 2001.

blocks into an unbroken chain. The quilting design symbolizes
the Holy Spirit, and my prayer is that the Lord's love and mercy

writes, "This first quilt was a gift to me by the artist,
my mother-in-law, as a labor of love. I have two daughters, both
of whom fell in love with it and started plotting who would lay
claim to it following my demise! Many solutions were considered
and rejected....time shares, joint custody, tow half-quilts,
etc. In true Gramma fashion, the problem was solved when, two
years after the first quilt, she presented me with the second
one. 'Now this is for you,' she said, but we both knew where
they would eventually end up.....heirlooms to be passed down
to each of my girls someday!"
